Peace Talks Collapses, as Niger Military Junta Cut Ties With Nigeria, U.S, France
PEACE talks between the Economic Community of West African States – ECOWAS, and Niger Republic has broken down.
The Economic Community of West African States – ECOWAS had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta to reinstate the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
President Bola Tinubu, who doubles as the Chairman of ECOWAS Thursday sent a high-powered delegation to the country to meet with the coup leaders.
This was in a bid to restore democratic leadership back to the West African nation.
The delegation led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) however, only met with representatives of the junta, adding that Niger has severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, France and the United States.
It will be recalled that on July 26, 2023, a coup d’état occurred in Niger, in which the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and the Presidential Guard Commander General, Bdourahamane Tchiani, proclaimed himself as the leader of a new military government.
Following the Coup, the ECOWAS has kicked against it, labelling it “undemocratic” and “unconstitutional.”
Moves have been made to impose stiff sanctions on Niger, one of them being the power supply cut to Niger by Nigeria.
Troops are currently said to be mobilising as well, for a possible invasion of Niger.
