Burkina Faso Junta Shuts Down Radio Station For Insulting Niger Coup Plotters
A popular radio station in Burkina Faso, Radio Omega, has been suspended by the country’s new military leaders.
The Junta government made this known in a statement signed by its Communications Minister Rimtalba, Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, on Thursday.
According to the Burkina Faso Junta, an interview on the said station aimed insults at the new Niger military leaders.
They have now ruled that the station be suspended until further notice.
“The development shows the solidarity of the two countries with the brotherly people of Niger,” the army stated via the Twitter application.
The station incurred the wrath of the new Junta after it granted an interview to Ousmane Abdoul Moumouni, the spokesman for a newly-established Nigerien group campaigning for the immediate reinstalling of deposed President Mohamed Bazoum to office.
Ever since the July 26 coup in Niger, the Junta in Mali and Burkina Faso have rallied support for their Nigerien counterparts.
The ECOWAS ultimatum given to Niger to return Bazoum to power has fallen on deaf ears.
The juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso have instead fired back, warning the regional body that it would perceive any military intervention in Niger as “a declaration of war.”
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held a second Extraordinary Summit on Thursday in Abuja to issue fresh sanctions and strategize on planned military action in wake if the Niger crisis.
