PROTESTS have engulfed many areas in Kano state as thousands of residents expressed their dissatisfaction over the planned military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States – ECOWAS, following the Niger Coup.
AfriqueCan gathered that, on Saturday, protesters turned out in their numbers to occupy towns in the Northern city in solidarity against the move by ECOWAS.
The protesters, while proceeding from street to street, insisted hat Nigeria and Niger are “brothers” and should not raise arms against each other.
The protesters could be seen waving the flags of both countries as they made their feelings known.
“Nigeriens are our brothers, Nigeriens are also our family and Niger is ours.
“We don’t want war, war against Niger is injustice, a plot by the western forces,” the protesters chanted.
It will be recalled that a coup in Niger took place on July 26, 2023, which ousted President Bazoum from office.
ECOWAS has, since, issued an ultimatum to the coup plotters to return Bazoum, who is in detention, back to power.
The Coup plotters have, however, not heeded the ultimatum and have, instead, expressed their willingness to defend their country in the event of any military intervention by the regional bloc.
Following the bloc’s Second Extraordinary Summit held in Abuja on Thursday, ECOWAS imposed fresh sanctions on the junta government in Niger, with Nigeria cutting off power supply to the West African country.
The ECOWAS has put forces on standby to intervene militarily in should dialogue fail.
