Guinea-Bissau President Tightens Security Following Coup Fears

THE President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo has hired two new officials to overseer his personal security.

The move is in reaction to a spree of Coups currently occuring all over Africa in recent times.

The Appointees were sworn in Monday during a ceremony at the presidential palace and commence work same day.

The President stressed that the new appointments became necessary seeing as the Coups in Niger and Gabon were executed by top government security officials.

President Embalo appointed General Tomas Djassi as his new Head of Security and General Horta Inta as his new Chief of Staff.

Both appointments were made on Friday.

AfriqueCan gathered that the two positions had remained empty for many decades and not been occupied by anyone till now

“It’s true that coups d’état carried out by presidential security officers have become fashionable,” the President told newsmen on Monday.

Embalo therefore warned that ““any suspicious movement will be met with an appropriate response.”

The New Head of Presidential Security, Djassi, had previously occupied the position of Head of the National Guard.

Recall that it was the National Guard that helped foil a February 2022 Coup aimed at toppling Embalo.

Inta, on the other hand, previously held the position of Head of the Central Police station in Bissau.

Guinea-Bissau is a country that has been riddled with coups since gaining her independence.

Four military coups have taken place since its independence in 1974, with the most recent occuring in 2012.
