THE African Union (AU) has officially joined the Group of 20 top global economies.
This was disclosed by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
Modi announced this while issuing his opening speech at the G20 Summit currently holding in New Delhi, India.
“I invite the representative of the African Union to take his place as a permanent member of the G20,” Modi announced.
The addition of the AU to the G20 bloc has received global support thus far.
Their addition follows after the European Union (EU)’s permanent membership, making them the second regional bloc to sign up.
Besides comprising countries with strong economies, the G20 bloc accounts for 85% of world’s global GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world’s population.
Among G20 countries include: The USA,, Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Turkey, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and Mexico.
