THE President of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Tajudeen Baruwa, has been granted bail by an Abuja Magistrate Court after been detained by the Nigerian police earlier.
Baruwa, 3 other national officers and 21 others were earlier arrested in the Federal Capital Territory.
AfriqueCan learnt that the Police, on Thursday, secretly put the aforementioned for trial.
Baruwa and others have, however, been granted bail by the court.
AfriqueCan also learnt that the Court adjourned the case till October 20, 2023, even though specific details of their offences being charged for are still unknown.
Baruwa and others were, on Wednesday, September 13, invited for questioning by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, where they were arrested and eventually detained at the office of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) located in the Guzape area.
The arrested are believed, however, to have been arrested over a clash by factions of the union on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Sunday, demanded the swift release of the NURTW President and others arrested.
The Union called out the Police for being biased in the issue at hand.
In similar vein, a statement issued on Friday by the NURTW Acting President, Kabiru Minjibir, described the arrest as “illegal.”
“It is disheartening that their concerns were not heeded and the roadmap not implemented,” the statement read in part.
The NURTW went on to accuse the Police of taking sides with those trying to wrestly leadership away from Baruwa.
