The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Defence Chiefs haves reached a resolution on an unspecified day to invade Niger Republic.
This much was revealed on Friday by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musah.
The resolution comes after a 2-day meeting of West African Defense Chiefs in Accra, Ghana.
Describing it as “D-Day,” the regional bloc seek to reinstall the deposed President Bazoum.
While describing force as the last option, the ECOWAS has fine-tuned modalities for an invasion should dialogue fail.
We are ready to go anytime the order is given.
“The D-Day is also decided.
“We’ve already agreed and fine-tuned what will be required for the intervention,” Musah stated.
The ECOWAS has, however, not ruled out dialogue, explaining that steps are being taking to engage the Junta in Niger peacefully.
“As we speak, we are still readying a mediation mission into the country, so we have not shut any door,” Musah said.
It will be recalled that, on July 26, 2023, President Muhammed Bazoum was deposed from office after members of his Presidential Guard arrested him.
Bazoum remains in custody, with the Junta set to try him for treason.
