FIFA WWC: England Beats Colombia, Reaches Semi-finals
ENGLAND Women national team Saturday qualified for the Semi-Final stage of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This comes after their 2-1 victory over Colombia in the Quarterfinals.
The Colombians, who were largely dominated in the first half, took a surprise lead with their first shot on target of the half in the 44th minute when Leicy Herrera chipped England Goal Keeper, Mary Earps, from outside the box.
The response was instant as Lauren Hemp was quickest to the rebound to tuck home the equalizer in the 7th minute of first half stoppage time.
The second 45 saw England dominate the game, with Colombia resorting to counters and the occasional threat on goal.
The Lionesses of England took a deserved lead in the 63rd minute through Striker, Allesia Russo.
England managed the game comfortably for the rest of the match to make it through to the Semi-Finals.
The win becomes even more laudable when considering that England had to play without their star forward, Lauren James, who was given a two match suspension following her red card in the previous match against Nigeria.
England will now take in hosts, Australia, who prevailed over tournament favourites, France, on penalties early on Saturday morning.
