SUDAN: First Batch of Nigerian Evacuees Arrive in Abuja
OVER 270 Nigerian evacuees, escaping the deadly conflict in Sudan have arrived in the country.
The Air Peace flight carrying the Nigerians, mainly students, from the Aswan Airport in Egypt landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Wednesday.
The NAF C-130H jet, also carrying about 80 persons, also touched down moments later.
They were received by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and the Director General of the National Management Emergency Agency (NEMA), Ahmed Mustapha.
The Minister disclosed that each of the evacuees would be given N100,000 to enable them settle in.
There are at least three million Nigerians in Sudan and the Federal Government has promised to rescue as many citizens as possible.
Sudan has been plunged into armed conflict with clashes between rival factions of the North African nation’s military government breaking out in western Sudan, in the capital city of Khartoum, and in the Darfur region.
Hundreds have since been killed while thousands of others have suffered injuries.
