EX-President of ZambiaEdgar Lungu, has sued the government to court after he was allegedly barred from travelling for a conference holding in South Korea.
AfriqueCan gathered that Lungu was invited for a world peace conference, only to allegedly get booted out of the plane for not having the government’s travel clearance.
According to court papers filed at the Lusaka High Court, the former leader is now seeking a judicial review challenging the decision of the government to bar him from travelling to South Africa.
The former leader’s party, Patriotic Front (PF), has labeled as “illegal” the line of action.
If he is invited and the trip is paid for or he can meet the cost of his own trip and that of his entourage, he doesn’t need to inform governments,” the PF’s spokesman, Emmanuel Mwamba,, pointed out.
The party highlighted a similar instance in the past where the ex-leader was blocked from embarking on a medical trip despite seeking permission from the cabinet office.
“These draconian and dictatorial actions are a violation of fundamental rights of the former president and have no place in true democracy,” Mwamba said.
It will be recalled that, in 2021, Lungu lost power to incumbent President, Hakainde.
