HUMAN rights lawyer, Maxwell Okpara, says the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission – INEC, Mahmood Yakubu is the worst electoral umpire in the history of Nigeria.

Okpara’s comment comes barely 24 hours after Yakubu stepped down as the boss of the electoral body.

“He declared the results and asked Nigerians to go to court, fully aware of what the court’s judgment would be,’’ Okpara said as he called for Yakubu’s arrest during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday.

“He ought to have been arrested, he has left behind a bad legacy. The younger generation now sees Nigeria’s elections as a cash-and-carry affair.

“The president has given him a national honour because he (president) is a beneficiary of the irregularity championed by Prof Yakubu.

“If we were in a sane society, as he was leaving the office, the anti-graft agencies should step in, arrest him and prevent him from leaving the shores of this country,” he said.

The oldest serving National Commissioner of the INEC, May Agbamuche, took over from Yakubu in acting capacity.
