Kaffy The Dance Queen

Bolatito Adebayo

Her shining skirts swam about her slender feet and her scanty top jingled softly with each rhythm.

Her limbs were in a constant motion bringing a wordless interpretation of the beats and soft strings.

As she twirled, swayed, with each alluring twist of her body, she told a story, a story of pain and poverty.

No one knew the horrors she had endured.

She looked up and saw the crowd cheering her, she smiled and quickly her face was frozen into a stone-cold gaze.

Her tired eyes have seen a lot, not all of it was pleasant.

Her parents had separated and her mum moved out with her and her siblings.

At age 11, Kaffy skipped her childhood.

The luxury life she was exposed to in her father’s house fizzled out and a new reality of pangs of hunger dawned on her.  For seven months, she and her siblings were forced to eat garri.

She grew up quickly to fend for her family. Kaffy would go to the farm to harvest vegetables and sell so that everyone could eat.

Later on, she became regular in an aerobics class at the National Stadium in order to lose weight.

Kaffy loved dancing and she began to creatively infuse aerobics with dancing and the class loved it.

Soon fate smiled on her when she was invited for a modeling job. She did an impressive solo dance and her world turned around.

Today, Kafayat Oluwatoyin Shafau- Ameh is a notable dancer, choreographer, dance instructor, and fitness coach.

She is the founder of  Imagneto Dance Company. Kaffy has been featured in many prominent musical videos in Nigeria and across the world. Her name is in the Guinness Book of Records and she has won several awards for herself.

Face your fears, stay focused and with determination you will come out triumphantly.
