THE President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has emphasized on the 10th National Assembly’s commitment to ensure gender equality in the country.
Akpabio stated this at the International Conference on Women in Governance organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja on Wednesday.
The Senate President attributes the few number of women in politics as a result of gender bias in Nigeria.
He stressed that it was his, as well as tbe desire of the National Assembly, to see more women involved in governance and politics in Nigeria.
He, however pointed out that achieving this in positions of appointment was far easier than in elective positions.
The Senate President adviced women to carry out more campaigns on the value of gender equality.
Akpabio also called on the Director General of NILDS, as well as key players, to formulate female-friendly policies that will boost gender equality.
In a similar vein, The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, urged the Senate to lead the way in gender equality in Nigeria.
She reminded all of the affirmative and gender quota bills which failed passage in the 9th National Assembly, while charging the 10th National Assembly to revisit it and pass the bill.
