(Movie Review) Domitila; A Disappointing Sequel

By Bolatito Adebayo

Is “just there”a recommendation?

I doubt that though. But that best summarises my feelings about the movie. Was I disappointed? Of course, I was. I remember the old Domitila; the intrigues and professional acting was a delight on screen.

So, I had high expectations of this remake. I was expecting a rarest feat and an improvement upon the original, but my hopes are shattered beneath wave after wave of cinematic ineptitude.

Sometimes a film comes with such high potential but ends up disappointing you in almost every way possible. Domitila sequel is one such movie.

Domitila narrates the story of a young woman who escaped from an arranged marriage, unfortunately in the bid to start afresh she is caught up with a prostitution cartel.

The plot is haphazardly unconvincing and also the movie has a string of ridiculously underwritten side characters.

Although the dialogue is good the acting storyline didn’t just do it for me.

I practically struggled to stay awake in the cinema because Domitila couldn’t entertain, enthral, and captivate me with its energy.

Please what is that nasal accent Chioma Okafor pulled in that movie?

That is comic relief gone wrong. Her character is so nauseating that I couldn’t wait for her to leave the screen each time she showed up.

Even the likes of Deyemi and Iyabo Ojo didn’t make the movie better.

Nevertheless, Stan Nze’s character is my favourite. The almost mute character shines bright like a diamond.

Moreso, Elvina Esewvre Ibru also spiced things up a little with her talent.

The picture quality is good, costumes and audio not bad too.

Overall, the Domitila sequel isn’t spectacular, and memorable.
