NEMA Issues Flood Alert To 19 States, 56 Communities

THE National Emergency Management Agency – NEMA, has alerted 19 States in Nigeria of impending rainfall leading to flooding.

The Agency issued this warning in its flood prediction released by Flood Early Warning Systems – FEWS, Central Hub, Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja, on Monday.

The prediction was disseminated by the Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of the agency, Ibrahim Farinloye.

According to NEMA, Anambra, Adamawa, Lagos, Ondo and 15 other states will experience this from August 14 all through to August 18, 2023.

As per the Director of Human Resource Management, NEMA, Musa Zakari, the reoccurrence of natural disasters including flood in Nigeria can be attributed to rapid climate change.

While speaking on disaster management, the Director noted that Nigeria “may need to re-examine some fundamentally new and more efficient approach to disaster management.”

Among the mentioned states in Nigeria, parts likely to to be most affected are Sagamu areas of Ogun state; Ado Ekiti in Ekiti state; Akure, Idanre, Ifon, Iju Itaogbolu, Ogbese, Owo, Owena and Ondo areas of Ondo state; Ifo, Ota and Aboh in Delta state; Lafia and Wamba areas of Nasarawa state; Jamaare, Misau, Azare, Itas, Kafin Madaki, Kari, Kirfi, Tafawa Balewa and Katagum areas of Bauchi state and; Ikom and Ogoja areas of Cross River state.

Ugba area of Abia state.; Ilesa and Osogbo areas of Osun state; Kosubosu area of Kwara state; Anka, Bungudu and Gusau areas of Zamfara state; Goronyo area of Sokoto state; Oguta and Orlu areas of Imo state; Ito, Katsina-Alan and Vande-Ikya areas of Benue state; Serti area of Taraba state and; Hadejia and Miga areas of Jigawa state are areas to be heavily affected as well.

Also to be affected are: Surulere, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Ojo Lagos and Apapa areas of Lagos state; Numan and Shelleng areas of Adamawa state and; Atani area of Anambra state.

The agency reminded all that in January 2022, flood disaster in Nigeria left at least 662 persons dead, with 3,174 Injured and a further 2,430,445 others displaced.
