NIGER Republic has finally reopened its airspace after a military coup which occured in July 26, 2023.
This was revealed by the Nigerien News Agency on Monday.
“The airspace of the Republic of Niger is open to all national and international commercial flights,” the news agency quoted a spokesperson of the transport ministry as saying.
The Spokesperson is also quoted as announcing that ground services had also recommenced.
The statement, however, pointed out that the Niger airspace remained closed to all operational military flights and others that required the prior authorisation of relevant authorities.
The announcement comes after the military junta in Niger closed its airspace before it’s reopening on the 2nd of August.
After ECOWAS had threatened military intervention in the country, the Junta once again shut down its airspace on August 6th.
Niger reopened land and air borders with five neighbouring countries: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Chad on August 2.
The airport in the country’s capital, Niamey, is still being used by some flights who have obtained special authorisation from the relevant authorities.
The move will now clear the opening for tons of food aid destined for Niger, which were previously stuck in transit due to border closures.
