ORGAN TRAFFICKING: Ekweremadu, Wife Receive Jail Terms

FORMER Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu has been sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison for organ trafficking.

The United Kingdom court also sentenced his wife, Beatrice, to four years six months while Dr Obinna Obeta, the medical doctor who was the ‘middleman’ in this saga was sentenced to 10 years and his medical licence suspended too.

The sentencing follows their conviction in March for organ trafficking. The Ekweremadus’ sick daughter, Sonia, was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The jury said Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctor criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney.

The conviction is the first under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015.
