UGANDAN President, Yoweri Museveni has lambasted the World Bank for suspending loans to the country over its stance on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer – LGBTQ, community.
While speaking on Thursday, Museveni acknowledged that the World Bank was trying to force Uganda to back down on its laws against LGBTQ and their practices.
The President, however, warned that he would not backtrack due to the tactics of the World Bank.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate that the World Bank and other actors dare to coerce us into abandoning our faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money.
“They really underestimate all Africans,” Museveni stated.
President Museveni pointed out the country might have to resort to borrowing from other means if necessary.
He noted that the country is anticipating oil production by the year 2025 and that will serve as another source of revenue for the country.
It will be recalled that Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ law spells out life imprisonment and a death sentence for anyone convicted of the crimes Museveni describes as a “mental disorder.”
The World Bank sanctions is not the first Uganda has suffered because of its anti-LGBTQ stance.
Earlier in June 2025, the United States of America (U.S.A) imposed visa restrictions on a number of Ugandan public officials.
